Saturday night in Goblin Valley was one of the darkest nights I've ever witnessed. New moon, so no moonlight. Near 0% humidity and transparency was something like 95%. Plus, it was only like 25 degrees outside, so it was almost pleasant. GV sits about as far away from significant city lights as anyplace in the country. It is 40 miles from the metropolis of Green River, and hundreds of miles away from any other cities worth noting. That gives you an idea how dark it was when the lights from Green River show up (in the frame left, showing a golden glow.)
The exposure was about an hour on a 30D. The rock formation was painted for about 8 minutes with a big yellow flashlight. If you look closely, you might be able to find the dude painting it...
